Remote Water Tank Monitoring

Know exactly how much water remains, how quickly it is being used, and when the tank is likely to run empty.

What WellSenseOS monitors

WellSenseOS turns ultrasonic distance into operational water intelligence: current level, litres and percentage full, usage history, estimated days remaining, and configurable alerts.

  • Current water level (distance and depth)
  • Litres and percent full from your tank geometry
  • Consumption analytics over time
  • Days remaining based on recent use
  • Low-water and anomaly-oriented alerts

How it works

Architecture flow Sensor Edge device Internet WellSenseOS Dashboard · Alerts · Analytics

An edge device (typically a Raspberry Pi) reads the ultrasonic sensor, the WellSenseOS agent forwards readings to the cloud, and your organisation dashboard shows live and historical data.

Current level, litres, and percentage

Measured distance from the sensor to the water surface becomes water depth when you know tank height. Depth and tank shape become volume. Volume over capacity becomes percent full — so you see more than a raw distance number.

Consumption analytics

Level history reveals how quickly water leaves the tank — irrigation, household use, leaks, or topping up. Trends beat one-off dipstick checks when planning deliveries or pump schedules.

Days remaining

Combining current volume with recent daily consumption estimates how long the remaining water may last. Actual use varies with weather and activity — treat it as a forecast, not a guarantee.

Explore the idea with the days until empty calculator.

Alerts

Set thresholds so you hear about low levels before the tank empties. Pair alerts with days remaining so bowser or mains top-ups can be planned, not rushed.

Remote monitoring

Once the Pi is online, open the portal from phone or laptop. No need to climb the tank roof to guess remaining depth. See also remote water level monitoring.

Supported hardware

WellSenseOS is bring-your-own-hardware: Raspberry Pi 3B+/4/5 and HC-SR04-class ultrasonics are the supported edge path today. Follow the setup guide for SoftAP provisioning.

Multi-tank monitoring

Farms and estates often run several tanks. Register multiple devices under one tenant and compare sites side by side — see farm water monitoring.

Frequently asked questions

How can I monitor my water tank remotely?

Mount an ultrasonic sensor above the water surface, connect it to a Raspberry Pi running the WellSenseOS agent, and view levels, history, and alerts in the cloud dashboard from any browser.

Can WellSenseOS calculate litres instead of just percentage?

Yes. With tank dimensions configured, distance readings convert to water depth, volume in litres, and percent full.

Can I monitor multiple tanks?

Yes. Add multiple devices and wells/tanks under one organisation and compare them on the dashboard.

Does WellSenseOS work with ultrasonic sensors?

Yes. WellSenseOS is designed around HC-SR04-class ultrasonic distance sensors on a Raspberry Pi edge device. See ultrasonic hardware.

Can I receive alerts when water is low?

Yes. Configure low-level thresholds so you get notified before the tank runs dry.
